Do it yourself

Here is a schematic and some hints should you wish to try this modification on your own.

Use at your own risk!

If you do not have a telephone, you can omit the circuitry at the bottom of the schematic.

Modification hints

  1. Remove the two screws at the rear of the top cover.  Remove the top cover.
  2. Remove the four screws that secure the tape transport mechanism.  Remove the mechanism.
  3. Remove the four screws that secure the main circuit board to the bottom cover.
  4. Remove the retaining clips from either side of the radio.
  5. Remove the four side screws and the ones at the rear that secure the bottom cover.
  6. Pull the face forward, disconnecting it from the main circuit board. Do not disconnect the flex cable.
  7. Carefully remove the bottom cover.
  8. On the bottom of the main circuit board, attach red, white, and yellow wires as shown.  Route these wires to the top of the main circuit board through a hole on the board.
  9. Locate and remove capacitors E006and E007 as shown.
  10. Attach blue, green, white/blue, and white/green wires using the holes for the capacitors as shown.
  11. Locate a ground location, such as a point where the RF shielding is soldered to a circuit board.  Solder a black wire to ground.
  12. Route these wires across the front of the main circuit board to the other side of the board.
  13. Reassemble everything but the top cover, routing all wires to the left side of the radio (facing the front) near the tape transport motors.
  14. Trim a circuit board such as a Radio Shack Multipurpose PC Board (model no. 276-150) to fit in the space at the left of the radio.  Drill a hole in the board to mount it to the tape transport mechanism, but don’t mount it yet.
  15. Assemble the circuit on the board.  Connect the wires as indicated.
  16. Cut the female end off of a 1/8” stereo extension cable.  Run the cut end of the cable through an existing hole in the rear of the radio.  Connect the cable to the circuit board as shown.
  17. Secure the circuit board using one of the tape transport mechanism screws.
  18. Replace the top cover.
